Arrival Information

Getting to Zanzibar

Zanzibar is served by Abeid Amani Karume International Airport (ZNZ), offering international and regional connections throughout the year. Guests traveling from mainland Tanzania may also opt for the scenic ferry connection from Dar es Salaam.

Transfers & Transport

The journey from the airport takes approximately 60–90 minutes, depending on traffic. For a seamless experience, we recommend arranging a private transfer in advance. Taxis are readily available at the airport; however, car rental is recommended only for drivers familiar with local driving conditions. For your comfort and convenience, reliable taxi services can be arranged throughout your stay — whether for short trips to nearby shops or for full-day private excursions.

Warm Welcome

Whether you arrive during the day or late in the evening, our team will be there to warmly welcome you and assist you with access to your villa, ensuring you settle in with ease. You will receive a personal introduction to the villa and its amenities, allowing you to begin your stay relaxed. A welcome starter set — including water, soft drinks, coffee, and selected snacks — will be waiting for you, so you can unwind from the very first moment.

Check-in Information

Standard check-in is from 2:30 PM, and check-out is until 11:00 AM.
Should you require an early arrival or late departure, we will gladly accommodate your request whenever availability allows. Luggage storage can also be arranged for your convenience

Location & Surroundings

Living on the Beach

Crystal-clear waters and soft white sands shift beautifully with the rhythm of the high and low tides, creating a once-in-a-lifetime experience. Just steps away, boutique hotels welcome visitors with restaurants and bars offering a tasteful mix of local specialties and European cuisine. The area enjoys stable temperatures year-round, averaging around 30 °C during the day and 25 °C at night. For your comfort, beach loungers are available. Swimming is best enjoyed at high tide.

Recommended: reef shoes, as well as high-SPF sunscreen and sun hats.

Local Shopping

Matemwe is a large fishing village with a predominantly Muslim community, known for being friendly and welcoming. To experience local life, you can walk into the village, where you’ll find several local shops offering fresh exotic fruits, vegetables, traditional local products, and freshly caught fish, depending on the time of day and the tides.

For everyday groceries, a supermarket is less than a 10-minute drive away and stocked with all the essentials. In Kiwengwa, about a 20-minute drive, you’ll find additional options with an even wider selection of products. We can arrange a convenient round trip for approximately $10–$20.

To respect the local culture, modest dress is recommended when visiting the villages.

Dining Outside

Less than a 5-minute walk along the beach brings you to several boutique hotels offering restaurants and bars serving everything from a casual pizza to beautifully presented seafood platters or lobster. Whether it’s breakfast, lunch, or dinner, you can enjoy anything all with an ocean view — if you wish.

Right next to us in the village, you’ll also find local restaurants specializing in traditional Zanzibari cuisine.

In the evenings, many venues come alive with music and live bands, creating a lively and memorable atmosphere for everyone to enjoy.

For even more variety, additional dining options are just a 20-minute drive away.

Tourist Attractions

Enjoy long walks along the beach, swim in clear waters, or go snorkeling, deep diving, and kite surfing while feeling the ocean breeze. You might even have the chance to swim with nearby dolphins — boats can pick you up directly from our beach.

Visiting nearby resorts in Kendwa and Nungwi, just a 30-minute drive away, opens up even more options — from romantic sunsets to vibrant nightlife, including the famous Full Moon Party. For another memorable experience, horse riding along the beach can also be arranged.

To explore more of the island’s nature and culture, take a walk through the village, visit local schools, or join a half- or full-day trip to discover Stone Town, Jozani Forest, or the famous spice farms.

And not to be forgotten — one of Tanzania’s greatest attractions: Safari trips to the national parks.

Safety & Practical Information

Local Culture

Matemwe, like the rest of Zanzibar, is a predominantly Muslim village, so modest clothing is recommended when visiting. Please respect local customs, private property, and daily life, and always ask before taking photos of people.

In markets, polite bargaining is welcomed—it’s part of the local culture. On the beach, locals may occasionally approach or offer services, but if you say “no” firmly and kindly, they will usually respect your choice.

Payments

The local currency is Tanzanian Shillings, while USD is widely accepted— newer notes are preferred. The nearest ATM is located in Matemwe village within walking distance.

We accept credit cards Visa / MasterCard and cash. Most local shops accept cash only, so we recommend paying in the currency in which the prices are shown.

Emergency

For any emergency, contact our staff immediately. Medical care is available within a 25-minute drive, and first aid can also be provided to our property. There is a pharmacy in the village for minor health needs.

Please remember to have travel insurance, which will help make your vacation smoother and worry-free.

Safety

Our villas are guard-protected around the clock, with a fenced area and CCTV monitoring public spaces. Every apartment and suite is equipped with a safe box large enough to store a standard-sized laptop.

Fire extinguishers are placed in visible locations throughout all villas, and fire blankets are available in each kitchen. An emergency point is located next to the main gate for quick and easy access.
